What is Soft Systems Methodology (SSM)?
Soft Systems Methodology, developed by Peter Checkland, is an approach for tackling messy, real-world problem situations where different stakeholders hold different and sometimes conflicting views of what the problem even is. Rather than forcing a single model of the system, SSM builds multiple root definitions that represent each worldview.
Through structured comparison of these models against the real situation, SSM helps groups surface disagreements, negotiate a shared understanding, and agree on changes that are both practically feasible and culturally acceptable, which makes it especially useful for organizational and policy problems where technical fixes alone will not stick.
