What is VUCA?

VUCA is an acronym for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity, originally coined by the U.S. Army War College to describe the operating conditions leaders increasingly face, where change is rapid, causes and effects are unclear, many interacting variables are at play, and information is open to multiple interpretations.

Systems thinking is one of the main practical responses to a VUCA environment, because it trades the search for a single predictive answer for building feedback-rich, adaptable structures and mental models that can sense change early and adjust, rather than relying on a static plan that assumes a stable world.
