What is Sustainability and Systems Thinking?
Sustainability challenges, from resource depletion to climate change to biodiversity loss, are quintessential systems problems because they involve long delays between cause and effect, feedback loops that cross ecological and economic boundaries, and stakeholders whose incentives often point in different directions.
Applying systems thinking to sustainability means looking past a single metric, like carbon emissions in isolation, toward the full web of stocks, flows, and feedback that connects energy, land, water, and human behavior, so that a fix in one area does not simply create a new problem somewhere else in the system.
